Description

Cataloguing the early works of Cuno Amiet (1868–1961) filled an urgent gap, for although his creativity as an innovative force in early modernist art was beyond dispute and constantly restated, scholars had still not conducted a systematic exploration of his œuvre.

Building on preparatory work by Prof. George Mauner († 2004), approximately 1,100 paintings dating between 1883 and 1919 were honoured in scholarly commentaries and supplemented by details of provenance and lists of secondary literature and exhibitions. Although many paintings of great quality were done between 1920 and 1961, Amiet produced his innovative works of greatest significance to art history during his early period. 1919 was selected as the cut-off point so as to include the sketches, studies and options generated in connection with his large-scale commission to paint the loggia at Kunsthaus Zurich. The catalogue raisonné also contains a complete reproduction of the lists of works kept by Cuno Amiet in his own handwriting.

The paintings from 1920 to 1961 are accessible free of charge to all users in an uncommented, illustrated online catalogue.

The printed catalogue raisonné with over 1,600 illustrations, most of them in colour, was published in two volumes by Scheidegger & Spiess, Zurich.
