Conservation and restoration

Our conservation and restoration department with its state-of-the-art equipment specialises above all in paintings, polychrome sculpture, and contemporary objects.

We offer the following:

  • Analysis of art works, where appropriate with the aid of scientific analyses
  • Conservation and restoration treatment plans and cost estimates
  • Conservation and restoration
  • Examination and treatment reports, where appropriate in conjunction with our in-house photography unit, and computer-aided mapping
  • Damage surveys, where appropriate in conjunction with our in-house expertise and appraisals unit (e.g. to assess loss of value)
  • Conservation-restoration surveys
  • Database-supported cataloguing for art works
  • Condition reports for loan arrangements, prior to transportation or on purchase
  • Consultancy about caring for individual objects or entire collections
  • Conservation support for collections and exhibitions

The workshop is able to draw as required on the following procedures and equipment:
large field stereomicroscopy, ultraviolet radiation for ultraviolet reflectography (UVR) and ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF), infrared reflectography (IRR), false colour infrared reflectography (FCIR), infrared transmission (IRT), radiography.
