Description

This latest volume in our series “Catalogues of Swiss Museums and Collections” examines the history of the Emil Bührle Collection, brings together essays on 70 selected masterpieces and provides the first full, illustrated catalogue of the works purchased by Bührle. Drawing on the collector’s posthumous archive and other original sources, the core text traces the ideas that motivated Bührle, records his participation in the Swiss and international art markets and sites his endeavours within the context of contemporary collecting. It also lends space to problematic issues, such as Bührle’s purchases of looted art. In twelve contributions devoted to selected paintings and sculptures, recognised specialists cast light on defining aspects of the collection. The catalogue is published in two parallel editions, German and English.
